There is a truth in the world of cryptocurrency that no one tells you directly:
The most boring way to invest is often the most profitable.
Every time you open Twitter (or X, if you want to be precise) and see someone bragging about quadrupling their money in two weeks trading, somewhere else there is a person who simply put €50 or $100 every Monday into Bitcoin, and now looks at their portfolio with a never-ending smile.
This article is for that second person. And maybe, if you read to the end, you will understand why you want to be next.

DCA stands for Dollar-Cost Averaging.
The idea is so simple that it might surprise you: you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals, regardless of the market price.
You don’t care if Bitcoin is at $90,000 or $40,000. You don’t try to “catch the bottom.” You don’t stare at charts for hours. You just put in your amount, every week or every month, and get on with your life.
A Simple Example
Imagine you decide to invest €100 every month in Bitcoin. Let’s see what that looks like in practice:
If you don’t know enough information about Bitcoin, you can read this article about what Bitcoin is.
| Month | BTC price | BTC you bought |
| January | €40.000 | 0.0025 BTC |
| February | €25.000 | 0.0025 BTC |
| March | €20.000 | 0.0025 BTC |
| April | €30.000 | 0.0033 BTC |
| Μάιος | €30.000 | 0.0033 BTC |
Notice something interesting: the average price you paid (€29,762) is lower than the mathematical average of prices (€33,000). This is exactly the “magic” of DCA you automatically buy more when prices fall and less when they rise.
DCA is not an invention of crypto. It has been used for decades in traditional stock exchanges, and many investors in stocks and index funds have been systematically implementing it since the 1970s.
The logic is based on a simple observation.
No one, no one, can predict with certainty when the perfect time to buy will be.
Even the most experienced fund managers in the world fail to beat the market consistently. A Vanguard study found that only 14% of investors who tried market timing were able to beat a simple DCA strategy over a 10-year period.
Fourteen percent. Think about that for a moment.
Before I explain why DCA is so effective, we need to talk openly about trading.
Trading, that is, buying and selling crypto for short-term profit, is not bad in itself. There are people who do it well and make money. But there are some truths that are rarely told:
Emotions Sabotage Decision-Making
Imagine you bought Ethereum for €2,000. In a week it drops to €1,600. What do you do?
Most people, even with deep knowledge, panic and sell. This is normal. The human brain has not evolved to remain calm in the face of red numbers that represent real money.
There is even a scientific term for it: loss aversion. The pain of losing €100 is psychologically almost twice as great as the pleasure of gaining €100.
Result? You sell low and buy high. Exactly the opposite of what you want.
FOMO is very expensive
FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out.
You saw Bitcoin go up 30% in a week and now you feel like “if I don’t buy now, I’m going to miss the train.” You buy at the top. The market corrects. You lose.
This is not a scenario, it’s the most common story in every bull run.
Trading Requires Time You Don’t Have
To trade properly you need: technical analysis, chart monitoring, understanding on-chain data, knowledge of macroeconomics, risk management, and psychological stability under pressure.
If you don’t have 4-6 hours a day for it, and even then, trading can be the most expensive hobby you ever take up.

DCA is not just an investment strategy. It is a system that takes the human element out of the worst day of investing: the day you have to make a decision.
Here are four reasons why it works:
Resets Market Timing
Since you invest consistently every, say, Monday, it doesn’t matter to you whether the market is “good” that day. Your average purchase cost automatically smooths out over time.
Turns Downfall into Opportunity
This is perhaps the most “unconventional” and powerful element of DCA: when the market falls, it’s good news for you, because you buy more crypto for the same money. Instead of panicking, you rejoice.
It is Fully Automable
You can set up a recurring buy on any major exchange (Bybit, OKX, Binance) and literally do nothing. The money comes out automatically, the crypto is bought automatically, you go get coffee.
It Forces You to Invest Consistently
The biggest enemy of investing is not the market. It is you, or rather the version of yourself that has been saying “I’ll do it tomorrow” for 3 years.
DCA builds a habit. And habits build wealth.
You don’t DCA on just any cryptocurrency. Asset selection is just as important as strategy.
Bitcoin is the safest choice for DCA. It has the longest history, the most liquidity, the strongest brand recognition, and growing institutional adoption. If you don’t know where to start, start here.
Ethereum is the second largest crypto and the foundation for most of the crypto ecosystem. It has utility, strong growth, and has historically delivered very good returns.
Solana, Cardano, Avalanche and similar altcoins can offer higher returns, but also much higher risk. If you choose to DCA in altcoins, do so only with a small portion of your capital, and only after you have sufficient knowledge of the project.
Golden rule for beginners: 70-80% in BTC, 20-30% in ETH. Forget altcoins until you feel confident.
Here’s something that many “gurus” avoid saying outright:
Here’s something that many “gurus” avoid saying outright:
This is not pessimism, it is realism. The crypto market remains extremely volatile. You could see your portfolio lose 60-70% in a bear market. If that money is your savings for rent or emergency expenses, you will panic and sell at the lows.
Some financial advisors recommend dedicating 5-20% of your monthly income to crypto, which you can comfortably “forget” about for 3-5 years. For someone making €2,000 a month, this could mean €50-€200.
Start low. You can always increase.

Enough with the theory. Let’s see what you do in practice.
First you need to choose a crypto exchange
I prefer the bybit exchange or if you are from America you can choose the Coinbase exchange.
The next step is to complete your KYC
All legitimate exchanges require identification. You will need an ID or passport and a selfie. The process takes 5-15 minutes.
Complete your first deposit to buy crypto and finally select the Recurring Buy category. You set the amount and frequency (weekly, monthly) and it will automatically buy the crypto you want.
A bear market is the best environment for DCA. You buy cheap. But many people panic, stop DCA and miss out on the best prices.
Remember: if you saw Bitcoin at €15,000 and didn’t buy, now you understand why DCA is so valuable.
DCA stands for “discretionary investing.” If you check the price every day, you start making decisions based on emotion. Make it a rule: check once a month, maximum.
DCA only works if you can hold for a long time. If you invest money that you will need in 6 months, you will be forced to sell at a bad time.
“I’m going to DCA [random meme coin],” that’s not a strategy. DCA only works with assets that have long-term value. There’s no DCA if the cryptocurrency you’re buying goes to zero.
For tax purposes and personal tracking, keep a record of every purchase: date, amount, price, quantity. There are apps like CoinTracker that do this automatically.
If you’ve come this far, you might be wondering, “Why doesn’t everyone do this?”
Because it’s boring. Because there’s no drama. Because you don’t have stories to tell your friends about how you made 500% overnight.
But those who DCA consistently and hold on are usually the ones who will look at their portfolio in 5 years and say, “Look what I’ve done, having done almost nothing.”
And in a world full of investors chasing the next big thing, “almost nothing” turns out to be quite a lot.
