How to Start Forex Trading_ The Ultimate Step-by-S

Imagine waking up at 9 AM, opening your laptop, spending two hours analyzing charts over your morning coffee, placing a few trades, and then closing your laptop by noon. No boss. No commute. No ceiling on your income.

Sounds like a fantasy, right?

Here’s the truth: that’s not a fantasy but it’s also not where you start.

The people living that life spent months (sometimes years) learning the craft. They blew up demo accounts. They read books at midnight. They made embarrassing mistakes with real money before they made real profits.

What Is Forex Trading?

Forex stands for Foreign Exchange. It’s the global marketplace where currencies are bought and sold. Every time you’ve exchanged euros for dollars before a trip abroad, you participated in the forex market just as a tourist, not a trader.

If you want to start Forex Trading, the Broker we use is Vantage Markets.

If you want to start trading Forex, the broker that I and my team use is Vantage Markets and FP Trading.

Here’s what makes forex extraordinary:

  • It’s the largest financial market on Earth: with over $7.5 trillion traded every single day. That’s not per year. Per DAY. The New York Stock Exchange? It handles roughly $25 billion daily. Forex dwarfs it.
  • It runs 24 hours a day, 5 days a week: from Sydney opening Sunday night to New York closing Friday afternoon
  • It is accessible with very little capital: unlike real estate or stocks where you might need thousands to get started, you can open a forex account with just $50–$100 or you can take a prop firm challenge and trade with up to $500,000.

Imagine forex as a global auction that never sleeps except on weekends, where currencies compete against each other in price, driven by news, politics, economics and human psychology.

Understand the Core Concepts

Most beginners skip this step.

They open an account, click “Buy or Sell” and lose money within a week.

Don’t be that person. Spend your first week just understanding the basics and when you feel confident, move on.

Let’s start with the basics.

Currency Pairs

In forex, you never trade just one currency — you always trade a pair. The most popular pairs include:

  • EUR/USD — Euro vs. US Dollar
  • GBP/USD — British Pound vs. US Dollar
  • USD/JPY — US Dollar vs. Japanese Yen
  • AUD/USD — Australian Dollar vs. US Dollar

In March 2020, at the start of COVID-19 panic, EUR/USD dropped from 1.1400 to 1.0636 in days as investors fled to the dollar. Traders who anticipated that move and went short (sold EUR/USD) made extraordinary profits in 72 hours.

What is The Pip?

A pip is the smallest standard price move in a currency pair. For EUR/USD, one pip = 0.0001. So if EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0870, it moved 20 pips.

This is very important because your profits and losses are measured in pips and depending on the size of your position, a pip can be worth $0.10 or $100.

What is lot sizes?

As a beginner, always start with micro lots 0.01 lot. This keeps your risk tiny while you learn.

Lot TypeSizePip Value (approx.)
Standard Lot100,000 units~$10/pip
Mini Lot10,000 units~$1/pip
Micro Lot1,000 units~$0.10/pip

What is Leverage in Forex?

Leverage allows you to control a large position with small capital, but you must use it correctly and without taking too much risk (i.e. know what you have to lose and what you have to gain).

Example: With 1:100 leverage, $100 controls a $10,000 position.

Sounds amazing, right? Here’s the dark side: leverage magnifies losses just as much as gains. With 1:100 leverage and a 1% move to the downside, you’ve lost your entire $100.

The golden rule of leverage:

Use as little as possible until you’re consistently profitable. Many professional traders operate at 1:30 or less.

Then, as you gain experience, you can move up to 1:500

Choose the Right Broker

The broker you choose is your gateway to the market.

You should find a broker with low spreads, CySEC, ASIC licensed, very good support, good reviews on trustpilot.

If a broker promises you 1:1000 leverage with zero spreads and a $500 bonus without any regulation, run. It’s a scam with a professional website.

If you want to start Forex Trading, the Broker we use is Vantage Markets.

Learn to Read Forex Charts

Charts are your window into market psychology. Every candle, every pattern, every line tells a story about what buyers and sellers are doing.

So that you can learn all this, there will be subsequent articles with detailed guides on the best strategies in Forex trading and how to become profitable

But let’s look at the Basic concepts in technical analysis:

Support and Resistance: Horizontal levels where price has historically bounced. Think of them as floors and ceilings in the market.

Example: If EUR/USD has bounced three times from 1.0800, this is a strong support level. Many traders will place buy orders there because there is a good chance that price will bounce back to that level.

Moving Averages: Smooths price data to show trend direction. When the 50 EMA crosses above the 200 EMA, this is a Golden Cross bullish signal. Below; Death Cross bearish signal.

You can often see if the 50 EMA on a 1h timeframe is below or above the chart

Below the chart = Long

Above the chart = Short

RSI (Relative Strength Index): Ranges between 0–100. Above 70 = overbought. Below 30 = oversold.

Build Your Trading Strategy

There are four main trading styles:

Scalping: Hold trades for seconds to minutes. Not recommended for beginners.

Day Trading: Open and close trades within the same day. Good balance of activity and learning opportunity.

Swing Trading: Hold trades for days to weeks. Often the best starting point for beginners.

Position Trading: Hold trades for weeks to months. Very low stress, but requires patience.

The Trend + Support/Resistance Strategy:

The Trend + Support/Resistance Strategy:
The Trend + Support/Resistance Strategy:

On the one-hour chart (1h), identify whether the pair is in an uptrend or downtrend

In an uptrend, wait for the price to pull back to a key support level or the 50 EMA to be below.

Go long with a stop loss below the support level or below the previous lows.

Aim for a 1:2 trade, meaning you risk $10 to get $20.

Risk Management

Risk Management
Risk Management

Never risk more than 1–2% of your account on a single trade.

If you have a $1,000 account, your maximum loss per trade should be $10–$20.

That sounds small. That’s the point.

Stop Losses Are Mandatory

A stop loss is an order that automatically closes your trade at a predetermined level. Every individual trade should have a stop loss, set BEFORE you enter.

Risk-Reward Ratio

Every trade should have a minimum risk-reward ratio of 1:2. That is: if you risk 50 pips, your target should be at least 100 pips.

Here’s why this math changes your life: even with a 40% win rate (losing 6 out of 10 trades), a 1:2 R:R strategy is profitable.

You can be wrong more than half the time and still make money.

Practice on a Demo Account

Open a demo account and trade with it for at least 3 months before touching real money.

Keep a trading journal during the demo period. After each trade write:

  • Why you entered
  • What happened
  • What you learned

After 100 demo trades, review your journal. The patterns in your mistakes will surprise you.

The Psychology of the Trader

Professional traders know that trading is 30% strategy and 70% psychology. Here are the emotional enemies you’ll face:

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): If you missed a move, you missed it. Another opportunity will come along. The markets produce opportunities every day. Patience is a skill.

Revenge Trading: After a loss, close your platform. Go for a walk. Come back with fresh eyes.

Overconfidence: The markets will humiliate you. Always. Keep your position sizes consistent. Let compounding do its work slowly.

Forex trading won’t make you rich in a month. But taken seriously, with the right training and discipline, it can become a real additional source of income.

The market will be here tomorrow. And next year. Take the time to do it right.
