What is gold as a trading instrument
and why it is like nothing else

Gold is what we in the market call a safe-haven asset, an asset that investors buy when everything around them starts to burn.

Wars, financial crises, high inflation, uncertainty around central banks – in all these cases, the world turns to the yellow metal.

But gold is not only a refuge. It is also one of the most liquid and volatile assets in the world.

XAUUSD typically moves 200 to 500+ pips per day, far outperforming pairs like EUR/USD or GBP/USD.

On days of major announcements, the move can exceed 1,000 pips.

For the trader, this means one thing: opportunity but also risk if you don’t know what you’re doing.

When trading XAUUSD:

  • Buy / Long: You believe the price will go up. If it goes up, you make a profit.
  • Sell / Short: You believe the price will go down. If it goes down, you make a profit.

You don’t buy physical gold. You don’t need a safe. You speculate on the price movement, through CFDs (Contracts for Difference) or a forex broker.

Why so many traders choose gold (and why many get burned)

Gold is currently the most popular instrument among retail forex traders worldwide.

The pros:

  • High liquidity: You can get in and out of positions quickly
  • During the London and New York sessions, spreads at major brokers are as low as 10–25 cents
  • Clear technical levels (support, resistance, trends)
  • Strong fundamentals that you can track (inflation, Fed, geopolitics)
  • Opportunities for both scalping and swing trading

The pitfalls:

  • Moves much faster than classic forex pairs
  • Punishes big stops as well as small ones
  • Sensitive to “surprise” news that you can’t predict
  • Many beginners treat it like EUR/USD. Big mistake.

How to Read an XAUUSD Chart Like a Pro

The chart is the language of the market. If you don’t understand it, you’re in a foreign country without a translator.

Which timeframe to use?

The principle is simple: You start from the top and work your way down.

4-Hour (H4): You see the market structure. Where are the main support and resistance? Where did swing highs and lows form?

1-Hour (H1) or 15-Minute (M15): This is where you find the precise entry.

To tell the truth, in all Forex pairs we should start from 4h, but in gold, to be able to find an entry, you will have to lower the time frame quite a bit (for example, below 5 minutes).

The reason is that to get a trading setup on a time frame above 30m, you need a huge account.

So you see the large time frames for entry and below 5 minutes.

Gold Scalping Strategy

Generally if you want to trade gold you should first gain experience with demo.

The best way to start with gold is scalping trading because if you do swing trading you will either have to have very low leverage or have a very large account.

The best time frame is 1 minute.

First, to find a good setup, you need to find the trend.

Once you find the trend, we should look for an entry.

For example, when we have 2 red candles and we see that a large bullish candle that breaks the two previous candles or one is a future target for buying.

This strategy works quite well in sideways and uptrends, not so much in downtrends.

You can see another example here where gold will give 2 entries simultaneously.

This strategy usually works on low time frames, but you can also find it on higher ones. The downside is that the price will react to this level.

Also something that will help is if there is support at the key lvl. Your goal is to collect many confirmations.

Best Time to Trade Gold: When to Get In, When to Sit Out

This is one of the most underrated pieces of gold trading knowledge. Gold is available 24/5, but not all hours are the same.

According to an analysis of 5 years of data, about 70% of gold’s daily movement occurs in just 6 hours: the London session (08:00-12:00 GMT) and the NY overlap (13:00-17:00 GMT).

The 3 sessions and what they mean:

Asian Session (00:00–07:00 GMT)

Gold moves very little, unless there is big news from China or Australia. The Asian session usually forms a range, which is the basis for the movement of the London session. For beginners: avoid this session.

London Session (07:00–16:00 GMT)

This is where the action begins. London usually sets the “theme” of the day. Early moves set the tone, which New York either continues or reverses.

New York Session & Overlap (12:00–21:00 GMT)

The most important session for gold trading. Gold’s daily high or low is created during this period on about 70% of days.

Prime Time: London-New York Overlap (12:00–16:00 GMT)

Liquidity peaks during the London-New York overlap (08:00–12:00 AM ET). Volatility often coincides with important economic events such as Non-Farm Payrolls or Fed announcements.

Risk Management in Gold

Risk only 1–2% per trade. Use wider stop losses (at least 50–100 pips in gold) but smaller lot sizes. Aim for a risk-reward of 1:2 or 1:3.
In other words: if your stop is 100 pips, your target should be at least 200 pips.

Stop Loss: Don’t “philosophize” it

The most common mistakes in gold risk management: stop losses that are too tight and are hit by normal volatility, using the same stop in different sessions, not adjusting lot size to volatility, and trading during major news without reducing risk.

One way to adjust your stop to volatility: use ATR × 1.5 as the minimum stop distance. If the ATR is 15, your stop should be at least 22–25 pips.

The 8 Mistakes All Beginners Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Mistake 1: Treating Gold Like EUR/USD

Forex pairs move 30–80 pips. Gold can move 200–500 pips in a single session. The same lot sizes that work in EUR/USD will ruin you in gold.

Mistake 2: Trading at the wrong time

The Asian session is a beginner’s trap. The Asian session creates traps and fakeouts. London sets the direction. New York brings high-impact news with violent spikes.

Mistake 3: Excessive leverage

A safe leverage ratio for beginners is between 1:10 and 1:50. Lower leverage reduces risk exposure and helps traders manage fluctuations more effectively.

Mistake 4: Tight Stop Losses

Stop losses that are too tight are hit by gold’s natural volatility within seconds. Gold “breathes” wider, give it some space.

Mistake 5: FOMO trading during news

You see a huge candle. You get in. And you eat the reversal. This is because you entered at the top of the spike. The solution: Let the first 15-minute candle close after the news, wait for a retracement and enter with the second wave.

Mistake 6: Not keeping a trading journal

If you don’t write down what you did and why, you don’t learn from your mistakes. You repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

Mistake 7: Averaging down (adding to a losing position)

Reversals in gold can be violent. Adding to a losing position multiplies the loss. If the position goes against you, the market is telling you something. Listen to it.

Mistake 8: Revenge Trading

You lost a trade. Now you want to “get back” the money. You open another, larger position without analysis. Result: double the loss. The solution: set a daily loss limit and stick to it like a law.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much money do I need to start trading gold?

Technically, you can start with a few hundred euros. But the biggest problem is undercapitalization – small account = high leverage = higher risk. Start with a demo, learn, and then only invest capital that you can afford to lose.

Can I trade gold at night?

You can, but night trading (outside London/New York) often has lower liquidity and smaller movements, which may not suit scalpers or day traders.

How long does it take to become profitable?

The honest answer: at least 6–12 months of serious study and practice. Some need 2 years. Those who “won quickly” usually lost even faster later.
