Imagine sitting in a casino. There’s a table with millions of dollars in front of you.

Everyone around you looks confident, cool, and in suits. You? You’re holding a cup of coffee and wondering if what you’re doing is right.

This is exactly how every new Forex trader feels in the first few weeks.

The Forex Foreign Exchange Market is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily trading volume exceeding $7.5 trillion. It is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, and operates in all time zones.

Sounds fantastic, right?

And it is if you know what you are doing.

But here is the hard truth: Studies show that 70-80% of retail traders lose money in Forex. And they don’t lose because the market is “rigged” or because they are stupid. They lose because they make the same, predictable, avoidable mistakes over and over again.

This article is the guide I wish I had when I started. It is written for the absolute beginner, the one who has just heard the word “Forex” and does not know what it means, but also for the one who has already done 2-3 months of demo trading and is thinking of moving to a real account or to a propfirm.

Let’s get started.

A quick Glossary for beginners (before we get into the mistakes)

Before we talk about mistakes, let’s make sure we’re speaking the same language:

Pip: The smallest unit of price change in a currency pair. In EUR/USD, a pip is 0.0001.

Lot: The unit of measurement for a trade. 1 Standard Lot = 100,000 units of the base currency. There are also Mini Lots (10,000) and Micro Lots (1,000).

Leverage: The ability to control a large amount with a small amount of capital. Leverage 1:100 means that with €100 you control €10,000.

Spread: The difference between the buy (ask) and sell (bid) prices. This is the broker’s profit.

Stop Loss: An order that automatically closes your position if the price moves against you by a certain amount.

Take Profit: An order that automatically closes your position when your profit target is reached.

Long / Short: Long = you buy (you bet it will go up). Short = you sell (you bet it will go down).

Now we are ready.

Start with Real Money Without a Demo Account

Demo trading is a way to practice trading in financial markets using virtual money instead of real funds. It allows beginners to learn how trading works, test strategies, and gain experience without the risk of losing actual money.
Demo Trading

John (a fictional character) watches a YouTube video. Someone shows his account with €50,000 profit in 3 months. John immediately signs up with a Forex Broker and opens an account with €500 and starts opening positions.

Within 2 weeks, he has lost €380.

What went wrong?

Forex is not just “buy low, sell high“. It is a system that requires:

Understanding the platform (MT5, Tradingview, etc.)
Familiarity with chart analysis (technical analysis)
Basic knowledge of fundamental analysis
Psychological stability
A trading plan

Without a demo account, you learn all this by spending real money. And there is no more expensive tuition, because if you lose money later you will be afraid to trade.

What you should do

Do at least 3-6 months of demo trading before putting in real money.

Use the demo account as if it were real. Don’t open nonsense because “you’re not losing real money”. Your success in the demo (with serious treatment) is the only way to know if you’re ready.

Think about it this way: No doctor performs surgery before years of practice. No pilot flies a real plane before hours in the simulator. Why should you be different?

Open a demo account today with the broker of your choice (FP Markets, Vantage Markets all have demos). Put €1,000 virtual money and trade as if it were real.

You Ignore Risk Management (The Deadliest Habit)

Maria has €1,000 in her account. She sees a “perfect setup” in EUR/USD. She is confident.

She opens a position worth €800 (80% of her capital).
The market moves 30 pips against her. She loses €240.

The next day, she tries to “win back“. She opens another large position. She loses another €300.

In a week, she has lost 54% of her capital.

Never risk more than 1-2% of your capital on each trade.

If you have €1,000, the most you can lose on a trade is €10-€20.
“But with €10 how am I going to win anything worthwhile?”

Good question. The answer: it’s not the amount you risk per trade, it’s the consistency with which you apply your system.

Overtrading – Too many trades during the day

Nikos sits in front of the screen for 8 hours. He sees prices moving constantly. He feels like he is “missing opportunities”. He opens a trade. Then another. And another.

At the end of the day he has made 15 trades. Of these, 9 were profitable and 6 were losing. But after spreads and commissions? He is at -€40.

Professional traders don’t sit in front of a screen 24/7.

Many make 2-5 trades PER WEEK. Some make 1-2 trades PER MONTH and make consistent profits.

The market is under no obligation to give you a chance today. If you don’t see a clear setup, the right decision is to do nothing.

You’re Ignoring Technical Analysis or Following It Blindly

Technical analysis is NOT a magic crystal that predicts the future. It’s a tool that tells you what happened in the past and gives you statistical probabilities for the future.

The basics you need as a beginner:

Support & Resistance: These are prices at which the market has “stuck” in the past. Buyers enter at support (the price “bounces”). Sellers enter at resistance (the price “hits a ceiling”).

Example: EUR/USD has hit 1.0850 four times in the last month without breaking it. This is strong resistance. If it approaches this level again, there is a statistically greater chance of it falling.

Trend: “The trend is your friend” this phrase is a cliché because it is true. If the market is moving up, look for opportunities to buy on corrections. Don’t go against the trend without a strong reason.

Moving Averages: They simplify the trend. If the price is above the 50 Moving Average, the market is generally bullish. Below it, it’s bearish.

Start with 2-3 tools like ema 50 on 1h and RSI. Learn them well. Don’t change them every week. Consistency beats complexity.

You are ignoring the Fundamental News

Yannis has a nice setup on GBP/USD. Technically, everything looks bullish. He opens a long position.
He doesn’t know that in 30 minutes the UK Inflation Data is coming out.
The data is much worse than expected. The pound is collapsing. Kostas loses 120 pips in 5 minutes.

What is Fundamental News

Currency pairs are influenced by economic events. The most important ones:

  • Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP): Monthly US employment report. Released on the first Friday of each month. Moves markets dramatically.
  • CPI (Consumer Price Index): Inflation measure. Influences central bank decisions.
  • Interest Rate Decisions: Interest rate decisions by the Fed, ECB, BoE, etc. Huge impact.
  • GDP Growth: Gross Domestic Product. Shows the health of the economy.
  • Retail Sales, PMI, Consumer Confidence: Of secondary importance but important.

Forex Factory (forexfactory.com) has a free calendar with ALL upcoming events, their expected impact (low/medium/high) and forecasts.

Before you open a trade, check if there is high-impact news in the next 4 hours.

Hunter Strategies & Forex Scams

Giannis sees a “guru” on Instagram with a Ferrari, a luxurious house and screenshots of an account with €200,000 in profits. The guru sells a trading signal service for €97/month. Or a course for €997.

Giannis buys. The signals fail 70%. The course is full of basic information that is available for free on YouTube.

Warning: before you trust someone, see if their analysis or the trades they and their team make are correct or have the right approach

Signal groups are groups that can show you setups with stop loss and take profit that are worth it, but it is up to you whether you take that trade or not

You are ignoring the Psychology of Trading

John has a good system. Backtesting shows a 65% win rate. But when he applies the system to real trading, it comes out to zero sometimes and lower.

What happens?

When the price starts to go against him, he panics and closes early. He loses €20 instead of the €50 he would have lost but he also loses the times when the market would have turned around and won.

When he is in profit, he closes early for fear of “losing the profit“. He gets €15 instead of the €80 he would have made if he had let it run.

Result: Small profits, small losses and the system that has a 65% win rate breaks even or loses.

Conclusion: The Main Truth About Forex Trading

Forex trading is one of the few areas in the world where a person without a special degree, without knowing “the right people“, without millions in initial capital, can build a very profitable career or source of passive income.

But this does not happen quickly. It does not happen without education. It does not happen without discipline.

Let’s do a quick recap of the 7 mistakes:

  • You start with real money without a demo account → Do at least 3-6 months of demo first
  • You ignore risk management → 1-2% max risk per trade, always Stop Loss
  • Overtrading → Fewer, quality trades. Quality over quantity
  • You ignore or blindly follow technical analysis → Learn 2-3 tools well
  • You ignore fundamental news → Use Economic Calendar before every trade
  • You fall for scams & “get rich quick” schemes → Free education, red flags awareness
  • You ignore psychology → Journal, discipline, probabilistic thinking

Start slow. Learn a lot. Risk a little. And improve every day.
