The Harsh Reality That No One Wants You to Know

According to ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority), the European regulator for financial markets, 74% to 89% of retail traders lose money.

We don’t say that. Brokers say that in their advertisements because they are required to by law.

Think about it: Out of every 10 people who start forex, only 1 to 2 end up profitable in the long run. On eToro (2024): 77% of accounts closed at a loss. On Plus500 (2023): 80% of traders lost money over a 12-month period. On IG Markets: 76% of retail clients in the red.

These are not numbers to discourage you. They are numbers to make you understand why this happens, because if you understand it, you can be in the 10-25% that survive.

Let’s go solve all the mistakes a beginner makes, you can also read this article, 7 Forex Trading Mistakes Beginners Must Avoid.

They enter Forex without knowing where they are entering

Imagine you decide to play poker in a casino in Las Vegas. Only there are no random tourists at the table, there are professional players with 10 years of experience

In trading you have to compete with hedge funds, artificial intelligence algorithms and institutional traders who do this for a living.

This is the forex market.

If you don’t know what Forex trading is, here’s a quick rundown:

It’s the largest financial market in the world, with over $7.5 trillion changing hands every day.

It’s not a stock exchange, it doesn’t have a central location. It operates 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, from New Zealand to London.

You buy and sell currency pairs. For example, EUR/USD means you’re betting on whether the euro will rise or fall against the dollar.

The novice sees this and says, “Simple! Euro or dollar, 50-50!“

The professional laughs, because it’s never 50-50.

What beginners don’t know before they start:

  • That there are spreads (cost per transaction) that eat into their profits
  • That there are swap rates (charges for positions you hold overnight)
  • That leverage can double profits, but also wipe out your account in hours
  • That prices are not driven solely by technical analysis but by news, central banks, geopolitical events

The Leverage Trap

why traders lose money

Let’s say you have €500 in your account.

Your broker offers you leverage of 1:100. This means you can control a position of €50,000.

The beginner hears this and says: “Great! With €500 I can win as if I had €50,000!”

That’s right. But you can also lose as if you had €50,000.

Example:

You open a EUR/USD position worth €50,000 with 1:100 leverage (you deposit €500 as margin).

The market moves against you by just 0.5%, a move that happens dozens of times each week.

Your loss: €250. That is, you lost 50% of your capital in one day.

It moves by 1%; the account equals zero. Margin call.

With some brokers, the leverage reaches even 1:500. This means that a 0.2% move is enough to wipe you out.

What do professionals do? They never risk more than 1-2% of their capital on a trade. If you have €1,000, you risk €10-20 per transaction. It takes dozens of consecutive losing trades to lose your account, something that statistics rarely allow.

Trading without Stop-Loss

A beginner opens a EUR/USD trade and the market starts to fall.

Instead of closing the position, he says: “It will go up again, I’ll wait.“

The market continues to fall.

“It will definitely go up. It just needs time.”

Down again.

“It can’t go any lower…”

This is called “hope trading” and it is one of the surest ways to lose everything.

What is a Stop Loss?

A stop-loss is an order that automatically closes your position when the loss reaches a predetermined level. It’s like a seat belt in a car that you don’t wear because you intend to have an accident.

You wear it because if something happens, it won’t be fatal.

Why don’t beginners put a stop-loss?

Because they feel that putting one on means “admitting defeat.”

Wrong. It means they think like professionals.

Every successful trader loses trades. The difference is that their losses are small and controlled, while their profits are larger. This is the secret of the risk/reward ratio.

Overtrading

Overtrading

Imagine John. He is a novice trader, he just opened an account. He sits in front of the PC, looks at charts, and feels like he has to do something.

The market is moving, there are opportunities everywhere, and every minute he is not in a trade he feels like he is losing profit.

This is overtrading and is one of the most expensive mistakes in forex.

The problem is not only the spreads you pay for each trade (which cumulatively eat up a significant percentage of your capital). It is also the quality of the decisions. Every trade you make without a clear reason, without a setup, without a strategy is essentially a game of chance.

Professional traders make fewer trades but better ones.

Sometimes they sit in front of the screen for hours and don’t open any positions because there is no clear setup.

This patience is what makes them profitable.

Rule: If you can’t explain in three sentences why you are opening a trade, don’t open it.

Revenge Trading: The Most Destructive Habit

You lost €100 on a trade. You feel angry. The market “stole” you.

You decide to get your money back now you open a bigger position to cover the loss quickly.

This is called revenge trading and it is how a bad day becomes a disaster.

The amygdala, the emotional center of the brain, is triggered after any loss.

This “fight or flight” mechanism makes you want to act immediately to recover what you lost.

Evolutionarily, this was useful for survival. In forex, it destroys you.

FOMO: The Fear of Missing Out on the “Trade of Your Life”

You open Twitter/X and see that GBP/USD is up +200 pips. Everyone is talking about it. You feel like you are missing out on a huge opportunity and you need to get in now.

FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out. And in forex, it kills you.
Why? Because when you enter a trade after it has already moved a lot, you usually enter at the top of the move just as the pros start closing their positions and leave the rookies holding the bag.

Remember: In forex, there is always the next trade. There is no “one-time opportunity that will never come again”.

The market opens every week, and there are thousands of setups. Patience is a strategy, not inertia.

They don’t have a Trading Plan

Ask a beginner: “What’s your strategy?”

The answer is usually: “I look at the charts and if I think it’s going to go up, I buy.“

That’s not a strategy. It’s a guess.

A trading plan is a written document that answers these questions:

  • Which currency pairs do I trade?
  • What hours do I trade?
  • What setup am I looking for (e.g. break of structure, moving average crossover);
  • How much do I risk per trade?
  • Where do I place my stop-loss and take-profit?
  • When do I stop for the day?

Without a trading plan, every decision is made on the spot, influenced by the emotion of the moment. And as we have seen, emotions in forex are costly.

A simple trading plan for beginners:

  • I only trade EUR/USD and GBP/USD (the most liquid pairs)
  • I only trade during the European or American session
  • I don’t open a trade unless I have a clear setup
  • I risk a maximum of 1% per trade
  • If I reach -3% on the day, I stop

They are looking for the “Perfect Index” that doesn’t exist

Every beginner goes through a phase called “indicator shopping”. They try RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci, Ichimoku Cloud, Elliott Wave… Every week a new strategy. Every month a new seminar.

This is called analysis paralysis and it keeps you in a perpetual search, never really improving.

The truth? There is no “holy grail” in trading. No indicator always wins.

Even the simplest strategy, even a moving average on a daily chart, can be profitable if applied consistently and with proper risk management.

Simply put: A bad trader with a good strategy loses. A good trader with a mediocre strategy wins.

Execution and discipline are more valuable than the indicator.

Unrealistic Expectations

A new trader opens an account with €500 and expects to make €5,000 in the first month.

To do this, a 900% return is needed.

The best hedge funds in the world target 15-20% per year.

This difference in expectations leads to:

  • Excessive leverage (to make the numbers work)
  • Unreasonable risk taking
  • Disappointment and abandonment after the first losses

Realistic goal for beginners: In the first year, the goal is not to make money.

The goal is to learn without losing much.

If you finish the first year ±0%, you are ahead of 80% of beginners.

Practical tools for trading psychology:

  1. Trading Journal
Keep a journal of every trade: date, pair, reason for entry, result, how you felt. Over time you will see patterns in your mistakes that would otherwise remain “invisible”.
  2. 30-minute rule
After a losing trade, get away from the screen for at least 30 minutes. Go for a walk, drink coffee. Your brain needs a reset.
  3. “Trade Less, Win More” rule
Set a daily limit of trades (e.g. maximum 3 per day). Quality always beats quantity.

Demo Account: The Beginner’s Best Friend

If you haven’t opened a demo account yet, do it now. It’s the only way to learn without real risk.

Most brokers (Vantage Markets, Fp Trading) offer demo accounts with virtual capital of €10,000-€50,000.

Do this: Before you put a euro of real money, trade in demo for at least 3 months. If you lose constantly in demo, real money will be lost even faster.

But beware of a trap: Many traders win in demo but lose in real account. Why? Because emotions are different when you risk real money.

Therefore, when you switch to real account, start with the minimum possible amount, €100-200 and trade exactly like in demo.

What the 10% Who Survive Do Differently

They are not smarter. They do not have magic strategies. What sets them apart:

  1. They treat trading like a business, not like gambling
They have rules, a system, and they do not deviate from it.
  2. They protect their capital above all
Their first thought is not “how much can I win” but “how much can I lose”.
  3. They have an edge, a statistical advantage
They do not make trades because “it looks good”. They make trades because they have backtesting that shows that their strategy wins in the long run.
  4. They are constantly learning
They read, they watch, they ask questions. They treat every loss as a lesson.
  5. They are patient
You do not have to be in a trade every minute. You wait for the right setup and then you act.
