Imagine sitting in front of your screen, looking at a price chart and not knowing what you are seeing.

It’s like trying to read ancient hieroglyphics without a dictionary.

That’s what I was once.

Before we get to the article, I would like to tell you that not all patterns work, or some work more often than not.

Today I will show you the most common ones

Today I will reveal to you the 5 most powerful trading patterns that will change the way you look at the markets and I will do it in such simple terms that even your best friend who knows nothing about trading will understand them in a few minutes.

These patterns are used every day by professional traders, hedge funds and individual investors around the world. By learning them, you get a tool that works in stocks, forex, cryptocurrencies, everywhere.
Let’s get started.

What Are Trading Patterns

Before we get into patterns, let’s understand what they are exactly.

A trading pattern (or chart pattern) is a repeating pattern that appears on price charts. Think of it as reading the “language” of the market.

The market doesn’t move randomly. It moves based on the psychology of millions of traders making decisions at the same time. Fear, greed, uncertainty, euphoria, all of these emotions are “printed” on the chart in the form of patterns.

And the best part? The same patterns repeat themselves over and over again, because human psychology doesn’t change.

Why Learn Chart Patterns?

  • Gives you signals to enter and exit a position
  • Helps you predict the likely direction of the price
  • Reduces decision-making based on emotion
  • Works on any timeframe (1 minute to monthly chart)
  • It’s free: no need for expensive subscription tools

Pattern #1: Rising Wedge Pattern

The Rising Wedge Pattern is one of the most reliable bearish signals in technical analysis.

Imagine a triangle that is “rising,” meaning the price is constantly making higher highs and higher lows, but the two trend lines that form the triangle are converging upwards.

Pattern #1: Rising Wedge Pattern
Rising Wedge Pattern

This means: the uptrend is losing steam. Buyers are pushing, but less and less. And when the momentum runs out…

The price breaks down.

Both lines are rising, but the lower one is rising faster than the upper one.

This creates the wedge shape.

Example

Let’s say you’re tracking company X’s stock:

  • Week 1: The price rises from €10 to €12
  • Week 2: It drops a bit to €11 (higher low) and rises to €13 (higher high)
  • Week 3: It drops to €12.50 (higher low) and rises to €13.80 (higher high)
  • Week 4: The rise gets “tired”… and suddenly the price “breaks” below the support line

This compression of the move is the classic Rising Wedge.

How to Trade a Rising Wedge?

Entry:
You enter a short position (sell) when the price breaks below the lower trendline, usually with an increase in trading volume.

Stop Loss:

Place your stop loss just above the last high of the pattern, if the price returns there again, the pattern has been “canceled”.

Target:

The classic target is the beginning of the wedge, that is, the point from where the pattern began.

Warning: The Mistake Beginners Make

Many beginners enter a short position before the breakout, because it “seems” that the space inside the wedge is running out.

Don’t do this! Always wait for the breakout and preferably a retest of the broken line below.

Pattern #2: Bullish Pennant Pattern

If the Rising Wedge is the “bad boy” that brings prices down, the Bullish Pennant is the exact opposite, one of the strongest bullish signals for a continuation of the rise.

Think of it this way: Imagine a sprinter running a 100m. At the 50m mark, he stops momentarily to catch his breath, but he doesn’t stop because he’s tired. He stops to gain strength for the next sprint. And then? He takes off.

That’s exactly what the Bullish Pennant is.

The 3 Parts of the Pattern

The Flagpole: A sharp, almost vertical rise in price with high volume. This is the “growth” before the flag.

The Pennant: A brief period of consolidation where price moves in a small, contracting triangle. Volume drops, this is normal.

The Breakout: Price breaks out of the triangle, often with a sudden increase in volume.

Example: Bitcoin and Bullish Pennants

Bitcoin is a classic example of Bullish Pennants. In many bull runs:

BTC skyrockets +30% in 3-4 days (flagpole)

This is followed by a 1-2 week “calm” period where the price “freezes” in a small range (pennant)

And then… boom. New rise equal to (or greater than)

Pattern #3: Bearish Pennant Pattern

Just like the Bullish Pennant, but… in reverse.
The Bearish Pennant appears in a downtrend and signals a continuation of the decline. It is the pattern that buyers fear, and short sellers love.

Pattern #3: Bearish Pennant Pattern

The Psychology Behind the Pattern
Think about what happens:

The price collapses sharply (bearish flagpole), sellers are in control

Some buyers say “maybe now is a good opportunity” and buy → the price stabilizes temporarily (pennant)
But the sellers are not gone, they just “rested”. When they return, the collapse continues

The Bearish Pennant is essentially a trap for optimists. Those who bought into the consolidation, believing they had found the bottom, are trapped.

Pattern #4: Double Bottom

We now enter one of the most favorite patterns of beginners and professionals: the Double Bottom.

It is a classic bullish reversal pattern, that is, a shape that appears at the end of a downtrend and signals that the decline is OVER and an increase is coming.

What does it look like? Like the letter “W”.

Why does it form?

Think about what is happening psychologically:

  • First Low: The price falls to a level where many buyers see an “opportunity” and buy. The price rises.
  • Recovery: The price rises a little, this is called a “neckline”.
  • Second Low: The sellers test the same low again. But, and here is the key observation, they cannot break it. The price reaches about the same low and bounces again.
  • Confirmation: When the price breaks above the neckline, the pattern is confirmed and an increase is expected.

Pattern #5: Double Top

The Double Top is the “evil twin” of the Double Bottom. If the Double Bottom is “W”, the Double Top is “M”.

It appears at the end of an uptrend and signals that the uptrend is over, a downtrend is coming.

It is one of the most reliable bearish reversal patterns in technical analysis.

The Psychology Behind the “M”

  • First Top: The price reaches a high. Investors who bought earlier start selling (profit-taking). The price falls.
  • Rebound: Some buyers say “maybe I hit the low” and buy. The price rises again.
  • Second Top: But here is the key, it cannot break the previous high. The “resistance” is too strong. The sellers come back and the price starts falling.
  • Breakout below: Once the price breaks below the “neckline” (the low between the two peaks), confirmation of the pattern.

Golden Rules for Pattern Trading Success

Golden Rules for Pattern Trading Success

Always Wait for Confirmation

Don’t “imagine” patterns that don’t exist. A pattern is only confirmed after the breakout, not before.

Always Use Stop Loss

No pattern is 100% reliable. The world of trading is full of uncertainty. A stop loss is your safety net.

The golden rule: Never risk more than 1-2% of your capital on a trade.

Always Look at Volume

Patterns are confirmed by trading volume. A breakout without volume is often a fake breakout.

Use Multiple Timeframes

Look for patterns on different time frames. A Double Bottom on the weekly chart is much more important than one on the 5-minute chart.

Practice Makes Perfect

Use a demo account to practice. View thousands of historical charts. The brain recognizes patterns automatically, but it takes practice.

The Most Important Rule: Risk Management

You can know all the trading patterns in the world by heart and in reverse, but if you don’t manage your risk properly, you will lose money.

Patterns are tools of probability, not guarantees.

Even if a pattern “fails” 3 times out of 10, if you win 3x what you lose, you will ultimately win. This is called a positive risk/reward ratio and is the basis of any successful trading strategy.

Good luck, and remember: the best trade is the one that doesn’t cost you more than you can afford to lose.
